This tune appeared in the late 19th century. Author and humorist Cliff Hanley wrote words for it in 1950 for the finale for a Christmas Scottish review performed at the Glasgow Empire Theatre. It is said the words were intended to be somewhat humorous and that Hanly purposely tried to put as many Scottish cliches as possible into the lyrics.
