This jig was adapted by musician and stand-up comedian Norman MacLean (Tormod MacGill-Eain in Scottish) from an 18th century jig called The Banks of the Devon. MacLean was a piper from Uist in the Outer Hebrides. A friend of his complained of the poor quality of potatoes in London, and he wrote this tune in response. MacLean's life was quite colorful, as described in the links below.
