This reel is a Shetland adaptation of the Irish hornpipe King of the Faeries. It was recorded in the 1950's by Shetland fiddler John Scollay, with his brother Peter on guitar. Scollay is a Shetland name of Norse origin.
This tune was known earlier by other names, including Quadrille de Chez Nous (1929), and it may be based on an 1823 opera tune Home Sweet Home. Glise is not itself a French word but may derive from glisse, meaning to slide or glide. It may be a reference to sledding or skating.
This tune may also be of Scottish provenance, but printings only go as far back as the 1880's, where it was listed as an Irish tune. It is not in the Great Highland Bagpipe repertoire, so an Irish provenance seems more likely. It is also known as Smugglers Reel.
This tune was written by Cambridge NY recorder and whistle player Caz Lewis, after seeing a mountain biker on a unicyle bouncing up on an steep trail in California.
