Tune Information
Author: Traditional
Origin: Ireland
The title stems from the fact that this tune was used as the melody for a song for Thomas Jefferson's 1800 US presidential campaign. The original tune was named The Gobby-O, a title that may refer to a beggar boy, someone that talks too much, or perhaps a small freshwater fish.
Lisdoonvarna in County Clare is a former spa town where Victorians went for the healing mineral waters. It is located inland from the Cliffs of Moher. This tune is also known as All the Way to Galway, which exists both as a jig identical to this one and the closely related reel of the same name.
The title may refer to a type of coat with tails that was worn by early 19th century dancing master, so it may date from around that time. The first printed version is from the mid 19th century. This jig serves as a vehicle for Northumbrian sword dancing, and apparently also a fair amount of snobbery about whether it is too simple to be played in a session.
