This tune was named after the Sligo-born Irish-American fiddler James "The Professor" Morrison (1891–1947). He obtained it as The Stick Across the Hob from Tom Carmody, who stated that his father Maurice had written it.
This tune is named for the Cliffs of Moher, along the Atlantic coast northwest of Lahinch, in County Clare. The cliffs are about 8 kilometers long and reach 200 meters in height.
