This tune dates from a Jacobite era (early 18th century) song and was the precursor to Yankee Doodle and closely related to the jig Road to Lisdoonvarna. It also appears with the A and B parts reversed.
This tune is similar to a West Kerry polka called Port Dálaig, named after the musician who played it, so it may originate from that area. However, it may have been based on a strathspey named Mrs. Ramsey of Barnton that was composed in 1794 by Scottish dancing master and musician Duncan MacIntyre (1767-1807).
This was written on October 2, 1984 by Judi Morningstar in White Lake, Michigan. The tune was named for St. Timothy’s Methodist Church, where her band Ruffwater Stringband played for over ten years, at a dance sponsored by the Detroit Country Dancers.
